Glitter DIY Pumps
My sister Gabriella had a dance this past weekend. She
wanted teal accents with her black dress. We were brainstorming ideas and
decided to do a fun glittery sole on her pumps to match her date. So she picked
out the shoes and I did the restyling! Here is a step by step tutorial :)
Supplies
Modge Podge:High gloss glue. Perfect for glittering shoes
Pumps:Lauren Conrad for Kohls. It doesn't mater what the sole consistency is. These were rubber.
Fine glitter-This can be found anywhere. I got mine at Joanns
Paintbrush-I used one I didn't care about so I could just throw it away after.
Newpaper-Glitter everywhere is not fun to clean up!
I used a paper cup and filled it with about a 1/4 cup of Modge Podge.
Then I poured in glitter to make a glittery first layer.
mixing mixing mixing
I layered on the first layer, I made sure to do an even coat and was careful on the edges. If you're nervous about getting glue on your shoes you can tape off the edges!
Then I poured loose glitter on the still wet first layer.
I used a dry paintbrush to lightly brush the glitter all over the shoe.
When the brush would drag a little I put more glitter on the shoe and continued to spread it to make sure I had even coverage.
let them dry overnight
The next morning I put on the final layer of Modge Podge.
It will look dull and white, but have no fear it dries clear (a rhyme!)
Done! Beautiful glittery soles :)
This is by far one of the easiest DIY projects I've done EVER! I was very happy with the results and so was my sister. These are perfect for a basic pair of shoes to give them pizzazz, to dress up an outfit, or that something blue for your wedding day :)
The possibilities are endless
If you have any questions email me! Also if you try out this DIY I would LOVE to see your results.
Have fun and don't stress. Any DIY involving glitter is a fun one :)
FAQ'S
Does the sole get slippery?
Nope :) The glitter adds some grit to the bottom that's similar to sandpaper, but doesn't scratch the ground you walk on, just keeps you from falling on your bum!
Does the glitter leave a trail?
The last layer of Modge-Podge keeps the glitter staying put. The bottom that hits the ground does begin to chip off and scuff similar to how pumps normally scuff.
Does it matter what type of sole is on the heel, i.e. rubber, leather, patent?
It doesn't matter what the consistency of the sole is, the ones pictured above are rubber and actually had a pattern but the glitter completely covers it and fills in any gaps.
Can you glitter the heel and not just the sole?
The awesome thing about Modge-Podge you can glitter anything! It will work with whatever type of shoe, but if you are nervous about it getting on parts you don't want glittered, just tape it off!

That's amazing, I'd love to do red or silver! Great idea for my semi formal! Love this blog, I love D.I.Y's too!
ReplyDeletehttp://chic-who.blogspot.com/
that's a great idea, cute.
ReplyDeleteDoes this work with shoes that have a pattern on the bottom....like converse??? And do they get very dirty if you wear them almost every day or is it easy to just wipe them clean??
ReplyDeleteI would think the part of the sole that actually touches the ground would get very messed up... might be best to have the glitter on the non-touching parts. That would also help with ground traction, so you don't slip in these.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest a Gesso or some sort of primer for surfaces. I have bought some before at a Michaels craft store and it prepares the surface and adds a little grit to surfaces when using things like paints, etc...
ReplyDeleteI thought about not doing the glitter on the touching parts but decided to do it anyways! Some chipped off but most stayed. They seem like they would be slippery but they were not at all! The consistency was similar to sandpaper from the glitter. A thick coat of modge podge would fill in the converse bottoms but I would let them dry overnight. I'll have to try the gesso! Thanks Nancy!
ReplyDeleteJust found this via Pinterest. And I love it as a take on your own Christian Louboutin-esque footwear.
ReplyDeleteYou say to ask any questions...I just want to see the whole outfit together, or what they look like on. Tell your sister to let you share a pic of the whole finished product...I bet she looked amazing and got tons of compliments on them. Thanks for sharing the tutorial!

OMW ! How cute !
ReplyDeleteHmmm .. few questions though .. how well does it actually stay on ? Did she/could she wear them outside ? or indoors only ?
ModgePodge isn't waterproof right ? so if you were to step in liquid & then continue walking .... someone's carpet may be sparkly ?! yes ?
Your welcome! I hope the gesso/primer/medium works. I hope you are able to try it on another pair of heels and share! I have always wanted to paint the bottom of a pair of heels red like the Louboutins, but haven't been brave enough! LOVE the glitter soles! Those ROCK!!
ReplyDelete@Krystal I will upload one ASAP!
ReplyDelete@TJ It stays on really well. The bottom may chip off similar to how high heels scuff. She wore them outdoor and indoor, the shoes were completely waterproof. She walked on wet grass, then onto cement, in a house and the glitter stayed put! The key to keeping the glitter staying is putting the layer of Modge Podge on over the last layer! And don't be scared it dries clear :) Good luck!
love this! Seen this idea around so much lately I will also be doing this on one of my black pumps, yours turned out amazing ;)
ReplyDeleteps where did you buy mod podge?
ReplyDeletecraft stores
Deleteamazing project! I will definitely be trying!
ReplyDeleteThat is amazing... super creative!! I am so happy I stumbled across your blog! If you get a chance, check mine out and let me know what you think! xox

Im in love with these but im curious as to how much glitter you needed to use?
ReplyDeleteSimply adorable. Love this idea for Christmas parties!!!
ReplyDeleteThe final layer of Mod Podge that goes on top, should that be the one that was mixed with the glitter, or just plain?
ReplyDeleteI want to know this too??
DeleteThe last layer I used was a plain one!
DeleteLauren-I got two 2oz bottles, and I've still got a full bottle and a little left in the other one
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing DIY, I'll definitely have to try this out. Love your creativity!
ReplyDeleteI'm following you on Blog Lovin now & am a new follower. :)
I have a Giveaway on my blog and also at this blog if you want to enter: http://ijorereinvites.com/wordpress/
Have a great day doll!
Is the bottom of the shoe sandpaper-y? The area I live in has tons of hardwood flooring and I'd hate to mess it up! If they are, do you think just adding a few more layers of Mod Podge would smooth it out?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
is there something you can put over the last coat of modge podge, that will dry clear but have some grit so one does not fall?
ReplyDeleteWhere do I buy the mod podge? Also, the last layer of mod podge should it be clear or with the glitter?
ReplyDeleteYou can buy modge podge at any craft or most fabric stores. Even walmart! The last layer is plain modge podge which dries clear. When they dry they are not slippery it feels similar to sand paper. The glitter won't fall off because the last layer of modge podge sets it. The bottom may crack or scuff similar to regular high heels :)
ReplyDeleteHas anyone tried this DIY yet?! I'd Love to hear about it :)
I did, and it turned out amazing! (: I used silver to match my black and silver prom dress! (:
DeleteI just made some for a bachelorette party I can't want to wear them
DeleteI just made some for a bachelorette party I can't want to wear them
Deleteyes! these are amazing! i made mine with bright red glitter - Christian Louboutin ain't got nothin' on me now!! <3
ReplyDeleteDid it make the shoes slippery at all? I'd be worried of losing traction and falling on my face....but I'd look fantastic as I was tumbling down.
ReplyDeleteAnyone scuff up the wooden floors etc. when they wore these painted shoes that feel like sand paper? They look like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteHow long does it take to dry them after you put on the last coat of modge podge?
ReplyDeleteThey did not scuff up the floor and I dried them for about 4 hours for the last coat and 12 for the glittery one
ReplyDeleteAfter the last coat dries are you able to wear them immediately ?
ReplyDeletehttp://wickedhailey.tumblr.com/post/14616161830/shoes
ReplyDeleteI made mine!!! Love!!!
Hey! I have those same shoes! Might have to follow your lead and bedazzle the bottoms now...
DeleteI adore these!!! Im from the UK though and have never heard of modge podge... does anyone know an alternative sold over here???
ReplyDeleteI'm in the UK and wondering the same thing. Maybe PVA glue would do the trick? Thinking of getting some cheap charity shop shoes to experiment with, using PVA instead of "modge podge
DeleteAfter the last coat dries you can wear them whenever! Those are amazing @wickedhailey!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure of an alternative version but I'm positive you can buy it online!
Miss UK, honestly I'm sure that modge podge is not much different from mixing [Elmer's] school glue with a little water to make it just a bit runnier. But our craft stores are filled with all kinds of other glues that would probably work well too, things like craft glue for wood, etc....that I'm sure you all would have versions of as well. You just need something that dries clear and solid (as opposed to something rubbery like a glue gun does). And if you find that it's a bit gooey, just add a bit of water to make it slightly more brushable, and it'll dry right, just the same.
ReplyDeleteI am going to try this. I bought a pair of black high heels from shoedazzle.com and they are super cute heels that lace up the back with hot pink ribbon, but the bottoms are just a plain tan color. I am going to do hot pink the exact same as you did in the blue. How do I post a picture for you to see my finished product? I am going to try this next week for my new years outfit!!!
ReplyDeleteThese are absolutely awesome! Did you find they were slippery at all to walk in after? Also, how long did the glitter last? Thinking about doing this for my friends wedding, thanks for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome and amazing!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

ReplyDeletehttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Skin-Delicious-BODY-SO-FINE/155882137780026?ref=tn_tnmn
i can't wait to try this!! one question: is the part that's touching the ground (the soles of the shoes) slippery once the craft is finished? the shoes i'm using have rubber soles. thanks!!
ReplyDeleteDID IT!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI even used the same shoes and will be finishing up my last layer of Modge Podge tomorrow morning :) I did silver glitter and despite my husband's reservations about my little project they turned out PERFECT (and he was also very impressed!) SUCH AN EASY PROJECT!
I will be wearing these lovely heels to my in-law's anniversary party. I loved this idea because it dressed up my otherwise slightly borning little black dress.
Thank you for the wonderful idea!
SOOOOO pretty!!!! I have plenty of boring black heels I could do this to! :) I'd totally love if you'd link up this project over on Kammy's Korner for the Trash 2 Treasure Tuesday party!! http://kammyskorner.blogspot.com/2012/01/trash-2-treasure-tuesdays-13.html
ReplyDeletedid the glitter come off easily?

Keep up the great work Happy New Year Tara..xxx
Thank you so much for posting this!! I'm going to do this project with my bridesmaids. They'll match the glitter color to their dresses and I'll do mine in Tiffany Blue. What a perfect way to get the girls together over wine before the wedding :D
ReplyDeleteDo you think it would work on the shoe part itself rather than the sole?
ReplyDeletewe were wondering the same thing. i wonder if the shoe would have to be a satin material to hold the modge podge and glitter, but if anyone knows; we would love to hear responses.
DeleteI did mine on a pair of vinyl ones. And it worked just fine. http://pinterest.com/shellp2673/glittery-heel-shoes/
DeleteI'm thinking of taking an older pair of pumps and doing this over the whole shoe. Any ideas?
ReplyDeleteLove this! I will be trying very soon! <3

Love this..think I will do the heels but not the sole :)
ReplyDeleteI did do glitter on the heels and added rhinestones! HOT!! :)
ReplyDeleteI did this on the trim around my closet :)
ReplyDeleteI did this last night and it turned out amazing! I did silver to match my black and silver prom dress! i love it!(:
ReplyDeleteOMG love this! Great post!
ReplyDeleteDoes it just scratch off when worn a bit?
ReplyDeleteI saw a similar tutorial using nail polish instead of ModPodge and glitter. Nail polish is more waterproof...
ReplyDeleteLove this. What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteOn the last step should you just use mod padge or should it have glitter in it? Or does it matter?
ReplyDeleteDoes this make your shoes slippery?
ReplyDeleteThis is INCREDIBLE! So glad I found this in time for the festive season :-)

Just did this with pink for my med school's white coat ceremony :)
ReplyDeleteBravo Francesca! Looking forward to glittering my "soul."
ReplyDeleteNow, do you or anyone else know how to "glitter" t-shirts?
My attempts have not worked and the glitter comes off on me, everyone I hug and in the laundry.
A DIY like the pumps here would be amazing.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I just did this project on a pair of red high heels. It worked out amazingly! They look perfect!
ReplyDeleteI do this a lot for my burlesque troupe. I use a sanding sponge (they sell them in packs of two at the Dollar Tree)to scuff the surface, go in at least two directions and clean with alcohol. I always do multiple coats of the glitter/modge podge mix but I'll try the sprinkle method for my next pair! One good thing about using multiple layers of glitter/modge podge is that you can do a great ombre effect.
ReplyDeleteI'm confident that once you read this again you come to read these articles and blogs.
